Hi Lo 13 European Blackjack

Many forms of blackjack found online have long, impressive names that seem intimidating at first. However, a lot of these are actually fairly normal blackjack games with an added side bet that can give you extra action. This means that if you can play regular blackjack, then you can play these games, too.

One great example is Hi Lo 13 European Blackjack. It may sound like a mouthful, but if you know the rules of blackjack, you’re just about ready to play!

How to Play Hi Lo 13 European Blackjack

Hi Lo 13 European Blackjack is played just as regular blackjack. Players have most of the same options available to them in any standard blackjack game, and the scoring and payouts are exactly the same. You may hit, stand, double (with the exceptions noted below), or split pairs. Insurance is offered when the dealer shows an ace.

However, the game uses European rules, which may be a bit different than the American-style blackjack games you’re used to. Here’s a quick rundown of the rules you can expect to see in this game:

  • The game is dealt out of a two-deck shoe, which reduces the house edge a little.
  • The dealer does NOT peak for blackjack at the beginning of a hand in which he has an ace or ten showing. This means that if you split or double down and the dealer later shows a blackjack, you can lose multiple bets on each hand.
  • You can only double down on hands of 9, 10 and 11, rather than on any two cards.
  • You can draw to split aces, which is an option not usually given to players in most blackjack games.
  • You can only split to a maximum of two hands.

Under these rules, Hi Lo 13 European Blackjack has a house edge of about 0.42%.

Hi Lo 13 European Blackjack Side Bet

The Hi Lo 13 side bet is a completely optional bet a player may make before each hand. In this bet, the player may bet that his starting hand will have a value of under 13 (Lo), over 13 (Hi), or exactly 13 (tie). Payouts for this bet are as follows:

  • Hi: 1-1
  • Lo: 1-1
  • Tie: 10-1

Players may bet on any or all of these bets at the same time, if they wish. The different bets actually carry different house edges, which are as follows:

  • Lo: 6.65%
  • Tie: 7.99%
  • Hi: 10.08%

All three bets carry high house edges, but Lo is clearly the best bet of the three; if you want to make this side bet, Lo is definitely the way to go.
