Elimination Blackjack

Elimination Blackjack is a format of blackjack used in many online blackjack tournaments. It is regularly used in the Ultimate Blackjack Tour, which is sponsored by the online poker room, Ultimate Bet.

Elimination Blackjack Rules

A round of Elimination Blackjack online tournament in most cases is played over thirty hands. In the preliminary rounds each player starts with $25,000 in tournament chips. The minimum bet in the preliminary round is $500 and the maximum bet is $25,000. At the final table players start with $100,000 in tournament chips. The minimum bet at the final table is $1,000 and the maximum bet is $100,000. However, one of the most popular Elimination Blackjack tournaments, the World Series of Blackjack, is played without limits.

As the Elimination Blackjack tournament proceeds players keep on getting eliminated at regular intervals. Players can get eliminated from the tournament in three ways. The first way is by losing all their chips. The second way is by not having enough chips to meet the minimum required bet. Elimination Blackjack tournaments have designated elimination hands in which a specified number of players with the fewest chips are eliminated.

Usually these cutoff points are hands #8, #16 and #25. The last player left at the table or the player with the most chips after 30 hands have been played is the winner. If there is a tie after thirty hands a play off round is played.

The exact rules under which Elimination Blackjack tournaments are played are decided by the host casino. The Ultimate Blackjack Tour follows the following rules. A maximum of seven players is allowed per table.

Elimination Blackjack is played with a shoe of six decks. A player has fifteen seconds in a normal hand to make a decision. In an elimination hand this time is increased to thirty seconds. If the dealer’s face up card is an ace a player may buy insurance against the dealer having a blackjack. A player may split and re-split pairs up to maximum of four hands. However aces cannot be re-split and split aces will receive only one additional card.

A player can only double down (Learn more about doubling down) only on the originally dealt two cards. A player may surrender his hand, and recover one half of his original wager. The dealer must hit on soft 17 and anything below, and must stand on hard 17 and anything above. Some Elimination Blackjack tournaments allow a “Secret Bet” where the other players at the table do not know the value of that player’s bet, until after the hand is concluded. This option can usually be used only once during any round of the tournament. This introduces an element of bluffing not found in other online blackjack tournaments.

Elimination Blackjack Payout Odds

The payouts are identical to the payouts in the normal blackjack games. Player wins with blackjack are paid out at 3 to 2. Other wins are paid out at even money. In case the player has taken insurance and the dealer has a blackjack the player is paid out at 2 to 1.
