Vegas Downtown Blackjack Introduction

Vegas Downtown Blackjack is an American hole card game in which the dealer’s first card is dealt face up and the second or hole card is dealt face down. The player can insure against the dealer having a blackjack if the dealer’s face up card is an ace. The insurance bet is optional and should be avoided because it does not pay in the long run. The dealer checks the hole card for blackjack if his face up card is an ace or a 10 value card. If the dealer has a blackjack the player immediately loses his wager, unless he also has a blackjack.

The player can keep hitting (asking for a card) till he busts. Alternatively the player can stand whenever he wants to. The other special moves a player can make are double and split. A player can double his wager after seeing the first two cards, but then has to take one and only one more card. If the first two cards are of identical value then the player can place an additional wager and split his cards into two hands.

The player can also re-split split hands and thus play up to four hands at a time. However, aces can be split only once and only one card can be dealt to split aces. The detailed rules for doubling and splitting can be accessed from the Help files in the game. The dealer hits on a soft 17 and stands on a hard 17. A soft total in blackjack is one that contains at least one ace, which can take a value of 11 without busting.

All tied hands push, including blackjacks. However a blackjack scores over other hands with a total of 21. If the player wins with a blackjack then he receives a payout of 3 to 2. For all other wins he receives a payout of 1 to 1. If the player had wagered the insurance bet and the dealer gets a blackjack the payout is 2 to 1. For tied hands the player gets his original wager back.

Because the dealer hits on a soft 17 it gives him a slight advantage. Simulation studies show that the dealer will end up with a better total most of the times when he hits on a soft 17. The player is compensated for this by the use of only two decks instead of the usual four or eight decks. The player’s advantage increases if lesser number of decks is used. This ensures that a level playing field is maintained.
